100,000 Cameras and Counting: Who Is Watching You?

Flock has expanded to over 100,000 cameras nationwide, with expansion still happening rapidly. Even if they were only used to track license plates and monitor traffic, that alone is a violation of the 4th Amendment as it is warrantless tracking, and a potential violation of the 1st Amendment as this tracking could identify people attending 1st Amendment protected activities such as protests, rallies, and activism events. It goes much further than that, though, with the abuse of the technology from the law enforcement and the threats to the data being collected. There are several documented instances where police officers have stalked their exs, current partners, or even just people they find attractive. There are cases where flock cameras have been left unsecured, allowing for anyone to access the feeds.

The imagery isn’t a mistake. Our government believes we are their sheep, and it is our shepherd – that is not a feature of a free society. We need individuals to rise up and resist government mass surveillance, and we need politicians in Ohio and federally that will fight from within to protect the privacy, individual freedoms, and constitutional rights that are guaranteed to all.

— Nathan Weise, Libertarian Candidate for US House District 1
