Libertarian Party of Ohio Condemns Senate Bill 63 as Anti-Democratic Overreach
Columbus, OH — The Libertarian Party of Ohio (LPO) firmly opposes Senate Bill 63, recently passed by the Ohio Senate. The bill seeks to ban Ranked Choice Voting statewide and punish local governments that adopt it by withholding Local Government Fund payments. Such a measure represents a clear act of state interference in local elections and self-governance.
“This bill is a direct assault on local democracy,” said Executive Committee Chair, Michael Sweeney. “Ohioans deserve the freedom to choose how they elect their representatives. The state has no business punishing communities for adopting systems that give voters more voice and choice.”
Ranked Choice Voting allows voters to rank candidates by preference, helping ensure winners have broad support while reducing the influence of party machines and spoiler effects. Cities using Ranked Choice Voting across the nation report higher voter satisfaction, more competitive races, and more civil campaigns.
“This bill is not about protecting elections,” Sweeney continued. “It is about protecting entrenched political power. When state officials dictate how local elections must be run and tie compliance to funding, they cross a dangerous line. This is government overreach at its worst.”
The Libertarian Party of Ohio stands with local communities that value fair competition and transparent elections. The LPO urges the Ohio House of Representatives to reject Senate Bill 63 and calls on voters to defend their right to decide how their votes are counted.
