Understanding Delegate Eligibility for the 2026 Libertarian National Convention

The Libertarian Party of Ohio will send a delegation to the 2026 Libertarian National Convention in Grand Rapids, Michigan from May 21 to May 25, 2026. Each delegate represents the interests of Ohio members during national business sessions that include officer elections, bylaws discussions, and platform votes. The eligibility rules below come directly from the LPO Constitution and Bylaws.

Basic Requirements

A delegate or alternate must meet all of the following conditions:

  1. Be a current resident of Ohio.
  2. Be a verified Supporting or Lifetime Member of the Libertarian Party of Ohio.
  3. Have affirmed the Libertarian pledge, stating, โ€œI hereby certify that I do not believe in or advocate the initiation of force as a means of achieving political or social goals.โ€
  4. Be a member in good standing without unresolved disciplinary actions.

Membership Definitions

Aย Supporting Memberย is an Ohio resident who has affirmed the pledge, is registered to vote in Ohio, has not voted in another partyโ€™s most recent primary, and pays the minimum annual dues of twenty-five dollars ($25).
Aย Lifetime Memberย meets the same requirements but has contributed one thousand five hundred dollars within one year instead of paying annual dues ($1,500).

Who Cannot Serve as a Delegate

Out-of-state members require approval of the Executive Committee to represent Ohio. National Supporting or Lifetime Members who live outside Ohio must be approved by vote of the Executive Committee to serve in the Ohio delegation.

Delegate Priority

LPO Bylaw 500 lists the order of priority for delegate selection. The order includes:

  • The Delegation Chair appointed by the State Executive Committee
  • Members of the State Central and Executive Committees
  • Current Libertarian candidates and officeholders in Ohio
  • Chairs and officers of county affiliates
  • Other members in good standing, ranked by the time their application is received

Application and Deadlines

The application form for delegates will be published on November 2, 2025. All applicants must apply before February 10, 2026, which is one hundred days before the national convention begins. Late applications will be reviewed only at the discretion of the Delegation Chair.

Summary

Delegate eligibility ensures that only active and verified Ohio Libertarians represent the state at the national level. Members who want to participate should confirm their residency, pledge, and membership status before the application period begins.
